Spartans make adaptations to stage camp

Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell, his assistant coaches and student volunteers had to compress this year’s version of youth camp. Typically, the annual camp runs three days. This year, it was compressed into two. “After sectional track, there were only three days of school and one of them was a half-day, and we didn’t want to try to get the kids over here on a half-day on the last day of school,” Persell explained May 20 on Tom Adams Field at Spartan Stadium. Persell and his staff did some lastminute improvising the first day of camp. The afternoon started outside on the practice field of the high school campus, running through various skills. A rainstorm, however, forced activities into the high school gym. “It’s probably harder on the kids to change gears like that than it is the coaches,” he said. “We had to get them all inside and get them organized, and I thought the kids responded well to that and did a good job taking the coaching that they were getting.” The…
