MIRANDA JAMISON The smell of soil and the hum of curiosity returned to the Ray County Library as local residents dug into the second installment of the “Learn to Grow Your Food” series, this time exploring the art and science of composting. Led once again by University of Missouri Extension field specialist Todd Higgins, the recent session transformed compost from a vague concept into a practical, accessible tool for anyone hoping to build healthier soil and reduce waste. Higgins, who specializes in horticulture across multiple Missouri counties, introduced composting as a natural process driven by biology and balance. “Composting is largely decomposed organic matter,” said Higgins. “It’s a process that starts with bacteria and ends with worms and insects finishing the job.” The event began with a hands-on demonstration of compost materials, featuring a sample from the Kearney yard waste facility.
