Preventing youth overdose, one kit at a time

When it comes to preventing youth drug misuse and accidental poisonings, small steps at home can make a big difference. That’s the message behind a new initiative distributing thousands of Medication Safety Toolkits for Families across the Northland. The kits are designed to help parents and caregivers create safer home environments by offering practical tools, life-saving medications and educational resources to properly store, monitor and dispose of prescriptions and over-thecounter medications. More than 2,000 toolkits are expected to reach households in Clay, Platte and Ray counties in the coming months. “These kits are designed to provide families with the tools and resources to create medication safe homes,” said Beacon Mental Health Community Prevention Specialist Emily Barnes. Each kit includes a small Deterra medication disposal pouch for getting rid of unused or expired medications, a two-dose box of naloxone to reverse potential opioid overdoses and prevention materials…
