Dear Editor, I am writing to urge you and the public to condemn President Trump’s cuts to important programs like Head Start. The main problem I have with such cuts is that they offer no alternative to what would otherwise be a perfectly acceptable policy or program. Removing or slashing aspects of the program would then just be destructive, rather than foundational or productive in any fashion. I personally do not see any reason that family-oriented programs like Head Start would be considered problematic, except in the case of budget expenses. Then, we ought to ask another question, one that matters despite differences among American citizens: Why is the Trump administration negatively targeting families and child care programs? Republicans could then cite these cuts as examples of ‘sweeping’ changes, when in reality they would be a quick bang for your buck type of fodder used to generate doom and gloom headlines in news publications.
