Friend, opponent pushes King to victories at invitational

CARROLLTON – A longtime friend and opponent helped give Richmond senior Kaylee King the extra oomph she needed to win two events at the Bruce Finlayson Invitational. Competing against Orrick’s Anela Fletcher, King won the girls 100-meter high hurdles in 16.3 seconds and triple jump by leaping 11.14 meters at the April 25 varsity track and field competition at Carrollton. Fletcher finished second in both events. “She pushes me because, for one, she’s my best friend; and then, just having her being so close to my level, it just really pushes me to go farther,” King said. With her victories, King helped Richmond win the girls team title with 129.5 points – 4.5 points ahead of runnerup Lexington. Overall, she placed in the top four in four individual events, also taking second in the 300 low hurdles and fourth in the long jump.
