McGill guides youth-laden ballclub in second season
The makeup of the squad Zach McGill is leading in his second season as Richmond varsity baseball coach is drastically different than his first.
“We’re definitely a lot younger,” McGill said March 12. “We were already young.”
McGill’s youth-laden team includes “a bunch of juniors, a group of sophomores and a bunch of freshmen,” he said.
“We are going to be developing as we go,” said McGill, a Richmond alumnus and former assistant coach.
Sophomore Jacob Lieberknecht, who returns from last season, is among the underclassmen. He’s thrilled to be part of a young ballclub, he said.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys in here that are coming in here to work hard, a lot of young guys that want to earn a spot up on the varsity and a lot of young talent,” Lieberknecht said. “I mean, we’ve got a lot of boys that have played a lot of baseball. I already have a really good feeling about this upcoming season and I’m really optimistic.”
