Griffin enters newish territory in Cottey signing
Addison Griffin has become a trailblazer of sorts.
A senior at Richmond, Griffin recently signed her letter of intent to join the cheerleading squad at Cottey College, a small, private women’s school a few hours south of Ray County in the town of Nevada. She also plans to study elementary education at the NAIAaffiliated institution, she said.
In cheering for basketball, volleyball and flag football games, and at cheer team competitions, Griffin will be part of a relatively new program. In June 2023, Cottey announced in a news release that it was adding cheerleading, bowling and dance to its offerings of interscholastic programs.
“This year is our first year and we have six girls,” Cottey Cheerleading Coach Emma Gurien said shortly after Griffin’s signing ceremony, held Feb. 7 in the Richmond High School gym. “So we’re hoping the second year that’ll be doubled, and then, kind of grow from there.”
