Good, bad or ugly, all history is important

History isn’t just a highlight reel. It’s not merely a collection of feel-good moments or something to be cherry-picked for convenience. History is the full story – triumphs, tragedies, progress, pain and everything in between. During Black History Month, acknowledging that entire story is more important than ever. Too often, history is sanitized, rewritten or selectively taught to avoid discomfort. Some prefer to focus only on achievements, while others try to erase injustices by removing statues, renaming buildings or excluding certain chapters from history books. But the truth is we cannot fully appreciate the resilience and contributions of Black Americans without also recognizing the struggles they have faced. We must embrace the full scope of history – both the triumphs and the tragedies – to learn from it and build a more just society.
