‘A LOT OF GRIT’
Richmond wrestling coach Cody Hogan liked the character he saw from Liam Hyder at the 28th annual Alan Isom Invitational – and the week leading up to it.
Competing at 126 pounds, Hyder fought his way to a division title at the Jan. 24-25 tournament, hosted by Center High School in Kansas City. He capped his tournament run with a 16-6 major decision over Summit Christian Academy’s Matthias McGregor in the championship match.
“He had a really good week of cutting down to 126 and then wrestling tough to take first,” Hogan stated. “He showed a lot of grit and determination to make weight and win.”
Hyder was one of two champions for the Spartans, who placed fifth in the team standings with 319 points. Junior Madix Hutchings took the 144 title, capping his run with a third-period pin of Knob Noster’s Joshua Taitano in the championship match.
“Madix looked like his old self and wrestled smart and fast,” Hogan stated.
