Fallen soldier honored with memorial highway

For decades, a group of U.S. Army veterans have gathered each year to remember their fallen comrade, Forest Dickey. Now, their efforts have culminated in a permanent memorial -- the SP4 Forest P. Dickey Memorial Highway. Dickey was drafted into the Army. He began his tour Sept. 15, 1966, and held the rank of Specialist Four at his death. Dickey’s military occupation or specialty was Watercraft Operator attached to the Fourth Infantry Division, Third Battalion, Twelfth Infantry, A Company. During his service in the Vietnam War, Army Specialist Four Dickey experienced a traumatic event that ultimately resulted in the loss of life on Dec. 1, 1966. The recorded circumstances indicate he died due to hostile action suffering multiple fragmentation wounds. The incident occurred in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, according to the US Army.
