Hoeper’s words help Lyon ice thriller

When it came time for Collin Lyon to help seal Hardin-Central’s 45-42 win over Tri-County in varsity boys basketball, he thought of what his coach, August Hoeper, might say. With Hardin-Central leading 44-42 and 13.2 seconds left in the final quarter of the Dec. 6 home meeting, Lyon was awarded two free throws after drawing a foul. He sank one of them, and following a Tri-County turnover, the Bulldogs ran out the clock. With Hoeper standing beside him, Lyon was asked about the key to maintaining self-control at the foul line at crunch time. Lyon replied: “Just listen to him so I don’t get yelled at.” Hoeper said he told Lyon “to just focus in and don’t think about it – just put it in.” Lyon said he did as Hoeper had instructed him. After Lyon had made the shot, Hoeper did some hollering over the din of the crowd, he acknowledged. He urged Lyon and his teammates to not foul “and do anything stupid,” he said.
