Hoeper is taking ‘game by game’ approach

August Hoeper is expecting “some struggles” in his second season of coaching Hardin-Central varsity boys basketball. “We just have to take it game by game,” Hoeper said. One reason for Hoeper’s expectation is a young-ish starting lineup. The quartet includes junior Kaden McGinnis and sophomore Sam Barnett, both of whom are first-time starters, Hoeper said. It also includes junior Gage Smith, who sat out his sophomore season. Smith, McGinnis and Barnett are part of a roster of 15-plus players. More than 10 of those players are underclassmen. “We definitely have a lot of young guys,” Hoeper said. “I think we had maybe six or seven freshmen come up. So that was good for us. We would’ve had more, but they just didn’t come out.” Hoeper, who led the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in the Class 1 District 13 Tournament last season, saw how his young squad performed under game conditions Nov. 22, when Hardin-Central opened at Polo.
