RHS boys hoopsters, new coach want to play for district title again
Like Richmond’s previous varsity boys basketball coach, the Spartans’ new coach has a history of winning.
Brent Behler, who succeeds Kevin Jermain, joins the program after a stint at Braymer, where he led the boys program to a runner-up finish in the Class 1 state tournament last season. Other stops include Hardin-Central, where he coached the varsity boys for three years and the varsity girls for one season.
One goal Behler wants to achieve in his new job is getting Richmond back to a district championship game “and see what we can do,” he said.
“We haven’t won a district title in the last two years,” Behler mentioned during a preseason practice in the high school gym.
Under Jermain, now the varsity boys coach at William Chrisman in Independence, the Spartans won three straight district titles (2020-22). In 2023, they lost to Odessa in a nail-biter in the Class 4 District 15 title game. And in Jermain’s last season, they lost to Oak Grove in the Class 4 District 15 semifinals,…
