Charlotte Sue (Knutter) Mayes, 90, of Liberty passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, at Our Lady of Mercy Country Home. Charlotte was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Elmira to Lloyd M. and Helen M. (Legg) Knutter, who preceded her in death, along with her sister, Ressie Jean (Knutter) Toon. She graduated in 1950 from Lawson High School as valedictorian. She married James Edward Mayes on June 20, 1953. They were blessed with two children – Rhonda Sue (Mayes) Self and Scott Edward Mayes.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; and children, Rhonda (Mayes) and Greg Self, and Scott and Tammy (Fleenor) Mayes.

Other survivors include six grandchildren: Tyler and Katie (Allen) Self, Landon Mayes, Ethan and Jenna (Edens) Self, Trinity (Mayes) and Anthony Hartnell, Conner and Honour (Sollars) Sabbert, and Caitlyn (Sabbert) and Nick Fowler. Five great-grandchildren, James Self, Charlotte Hartnell, Skye Fowler, Blake Self and David Self, also survive.

Charlotte was a steadfast wife, loving mother, devoted grandmother, avid party hostess and eternal servant unto others. She loved to cook and bake, and nobody made better guacamole or pecan pie.

She enjoyed tending to her garden and plants, cross stitching, playing pitch and spoiling her grandchildren.

She served as PTA president at Gracemor Elementary in Kansas City and was a Cub Scout leader.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Polo Christian Church or Elmira Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Visitation was scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Polo Christian Church, followed by a service celebrating Charlotte’s life at 2, also at the church. Burial was to follow at Prairie Ridge Cemetery, west of Polo.
