Richmond readies for Bell Game clash

Richmond coach Nick Persell and his Spartans aren’t playing any run-of-themill varsity 11-man football game Friday, when they’ll face Lexington on the road in Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division play. They’re playing in The Bell Game. Like previous meetings, the winning team will get to display the Bell Trophy in its high school. “This game is different than any game we play every year. … You can throw records out the window,” Persell said Monday on the team’s practice field. “You can throw all past matchups out the window. It’s the Super Bowl for them and it’s a huge game for us as well, and we know they’ll come out and play the best game they’ve played all year.” But a key to winning this year’s Bell Game is to not think of it as a big game, Richmond senior teammates Bryer Farnan and Chris Webb agreed. “It doesn’t really matter who we face,” said Farnan, a wide receiver/defensive back. “It’s not about how good or bad they play; it’s just about how we play.” A…
