City crew discovers, repairs main line leak

Richmond Public Works Department personnel were fortunate when discovering and treating a water leak recently, according to City Manager Tonya Willim. In materials sent to city leaders, Willim stated personnel found the leak in a 4-inch water main on Shotwell Street. The leak resulted from “a 360-degree split,” she wrote. “This might be one of those leaks that we’ve been chasing for quite a while,” Willim told city leaders Tuesday during the Richmond City Council’s regular meeting at City Hall. The leak was difficult to detect, Willim acknowledged. “It was very small – very, very much surface water,” she said. Moreover, the leak occurred beneath layers of asphalt, concrete, brick and gravel, according to Willim. “And then, where it was draining, it was draining into a ditch,” she said.
