Bearcats give Sims ‘pretty special moment’ with road win
Chase Sims had what he called “a pretty special moment” on Sept. 13.
That night, Sims got his first victory as Orrick’s varsity 8-man football coach, with the Bearcats thumping the Keytesville/Brunswick/Northwestern of Mendon co-op 48-18 at Keytesville. As the Richmond News reported, Sims replaced Kirk Thacker, who recently resigned as varsity track and football coach and announced his plans to retire as a teacher. Thacker, a Richmond High School alumnus, was into his fourth season when he resigned.
“I told Kirk I’d give these boys everything I have to offer and that he’s built a great program that I hope to live up to,” Sims stated Monday via email.
Thacker was among the people Sims credited with helping him get victory No. 1. He also credited assistant coach Jonathan Kinder and Seth Smith, Orrick’s athletic director.
