Spartans ride ‘pretty clean’ first half to win over Owls

Good first half. The second half? Not as good. That was the consensus among Richmond coach Nick Persell, and teammates Bryer Farnan and Dryden Hendrix when evaluating the Spartans’ 49-27 win over Marshall in varsity 11man football. “(The) first half, I thought we played a pretty clean game. … We didn’t turn the ball over on offense,” Persell said minutes after the Sept. 13 home victory. “Defensively, we kind of gave them a few things, but we got them stopped in the end.” The second half, however, the Spartans (2-1) hurt themselves with turnovers, Persell acknowledged. “We wanted to come out in the second half and kind of duplicate what we did in the first half – and maybe even do it better – and we didn’t achieve that,” he said.
