Spartans ‘own’ Fighting Irish

Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell and his staff gave the Spartans a two-word motto to follow as they prepared for their Sept. 6 meeting with visiting St. Joseph Lafayette: “Own it.” “That spoke to owning your preparation and owning your mistakes you made, but also owning your play on the field and what you (have) got to do to get better,” Persell said. The Spartans ended up owning the Fighting Irish, cruising to a 30-0 victory. A good practice week was key to the shutout, Persell suggested. The Spartans (1-1) displayed more physicality, focus and intensity than they had in preparing for their season opener with Harrisonville, he said. “(Those are) the kinds of things you have to do to improve – and we definitely needed to improve after the Week 1 loss,” Persell said. “And I think we did.” With the increase in physicality came “a lot of chirping,” acknowledged senior tight end/linebacker Tristin McCoy. “But it was good,” McCoy said. “We needed it.” “Good,” however,…
