Richmond Middle School becomes “Heart Safe School”

Richmond Middle School was designated a Heart-Safe School on Aug. 16 as part of the Project Adam initiative in partnership with Children’s Mercy Hospital’s Heart Thrive Team. The certification was achieved by establishing an Emergency Response Team, developing procedures for responding to cardiac emergencies, team training and undergoing testing by Children’s Mercy staff. Project Adam is a nationwide community initiative that originated in Wisconsin in 1999 as a tribute to Adam Lemel, a 17-yearold high school student who tragically passed away while playing basketball. The primary objective of Project Adam is to save lives by equipping schools and communities to be prepared for sudden cardiac arrests. Project Adam’s partner programs are dedicated to saving lives by establishing coordinated CPR-AED protocols, ensuring the availability of accessible AEDs, trained staff and emergency response plans.
