Gridiron Spartans start season with ‘anomaly’
Richmond varsity coach Nick Persell and his Spartans won’t need to board a bus for a while this 11-man football season.
The Spartans will open Friday by hosting Harrisonville – their first opener at Spartan Stadium since 2020. It’s the first of three straight home games. Missouri State High School Activities Association records for Richmond dating back to 2007 indicate the Spartans haven’t played three straight home games to start a season during that time frame.
“That’s a little bit of an anomaly, schedulewise, for that to happen,” Persell said Aug. 19 after the Red and White Scrimmage. “I’m not really sure how it happened, exactly. But we’ll take it, though. Nothing like playing in front of your home crowd. … We love to play for our community.”
Running back/linebacker Dryden Hendrix agreed.
“We’re excited to host,” said Hendrix, a sophomore. “(We) want to bring the crowd out, get the people out here, kind of bring the energy back to Richmond football.”
