Eagle Scout presents flag retirement box

Richmond resident Boy Scout Jasper Gay presented a U.S. Flag Retirement Box to Ray County Presiding Commissioner Billy Gaines at the Ray County Courthouse. Gay built the box for area citizens to drop off flags for proper disposal as part of an Eagle Scout project. The ceremony began by explaining how achievement is earned. “Eagle Scout has the highest rank in Boy Scouts of America,” said Scout Leader Brian James. “Since its inception in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by over 2.5 million scouts. The requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, 14 of which are mandatory for those with citizenship. The capstone of the Eagle rank includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Jasper’s project is a flag retirement collection box to be used in the Ray County courthouse for Richmond and surrounding communities.
