Commissioners prepare for flooding
Preparations for potential flooding along the levee system was the main topic of discussion at a recent Ray County Commissioner meeting.
The current conditions of the levees were addressed.
“We have a much more robust levee system than we had 20 years ago by two to three times,” said John Gill, member of the levee district board. “They are not necessarily taller but way stronger. Landowners have put a little over a million dollars into the levee system in the last 20 years or so. We’ve made a lot of improvements to protect the county.
“The issue that needs to be resolved is with railroads whose tracks pass through the county’s levee system. Specifically, the railroad west of Hardin runs through the levee instead of over it, and is only elevated to some degree rather than fully above the levee.
