Thompson speaks on educational legislation
District 53 state Rep. Terry Thompson recently shared insight on open enrollment with the Richmond R-XVI School Board, stating the topic is “back with a vengeance.”
The Public School Open Enrollment Act, which enables K-12 students to transfer from their resident district to a nonresident district, shall become effective on July 1.
“Open enrollment school choice is back with vengeance and it has enough votes to get out of the house,” said Thompson. “I strongly believe in communication, education and relationships. I believe in local control and being accountable.”
On or before December 1st of each year, each school district and charter school shall indicate whether it will participate in the open enrollment program during the subsequent school year.
Participating districts and schools may accept transferring nonresident students from any other school district.
