Historians, local residents honor British Missionary
A historical marker honoring Ray County citizen Isaac Russell will be dedicated on Saturday, June 3 at 9 a.m. Russell was a prominent figure in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was among the first of the Church’s missionaries to England.
Russell taught the restored gospel to the people of Alston, England in 1837. There were seven men total who traveled to England, including Russell and later in life – six of the seven men were buried in cemeteries aside from Russell. He found much success but was also persecuted by people who were once his friends. The site of Isaac Russell’s grave has long been a research topic among Ray County historians.
Linda Emley gathered a group and worked to find the gravesite in 2014. Ray County resident and ecclesiastical leader Michael Call compiled research of histories, letters and journals of the Russell family.
