Swigert learning on the job as OHS golf coach

Many years ago, Matt Swigert learned how to play golf. Many years later, he’s learning how to coach it. Swigert, who took up golf in the 1980s around age 12, is the new coach at Orrick High School. He succeeds Mitch Comstock, who left last spring to teach and coach in the Lawson R-XIV School District. Specifically, Swigert has had to learn the administrative-related aspects of coaching golf, he said Monday afternoon at Excelsior Springs Golf Course, where the Bearcats play their home competitions. Or as Swigert put it: “You run matches, you coordinate matches.” Swigert got his first taste of running a competition on March 22, when the Bearcats hosted a best ball tournament and finished 11th among 14 schools with a 371. He credited Comstock and Richmond coach Murray Dennis with helping him to get through it. Comstock assisted Swigert “in showing me how to get things set up and organized,” Swigert said.
