John William “Johnnie” Stockton, 62, of Richmond passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at his home.

John was born on Sept. 18, 1960, in Ray County to William Stockton Jr. and Myrtle (Wormsley) Stockton.

John is survived by: his sisters, Connie (Dave) Powell of the home and Nellie (John) Sheeham of Kansas City; brothers, Robert Hendricks of Independence, Robert (Monica) Dixon of Branson and Donald (Jessica) Stockton of Rockville; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and his best friend and faithful dog, Mitzi Mae.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, William and Nelle Stockton, and John and Cora Wormsley; many aunts and uncles, and nephews; a niece; his sisters, Shirley (Clarence) Ellison and Eva (Carl) Ramseyer; and his brother, Joe (Roxey) Hendricks.

John was a fighter from the day he was born. He faced many physical challenges, always with a smile. The first five years of his life were spent in Children’s Mercy Hospital.

He was reared and educated in Archie and graduated with the class of 1980 from Archie High School. John was always smiling and happy, and loved to talk to anyone about anything. He was the poster child for March of Dimes and made many TV appearances on the “Torey Southwick and Ol’ Gus Show.”

John enjoyed playing poker stars, listening to his police scanner and audio books, history and arguing politics.

The family wishes to thank the Ray County Memorial Hospital, North Kansas City Hospital and Shirkey Hospice. A special thank you to the hospice nurses, Kathy, Kathy and Rachel; his social worker, Becky; and Rev. Tom Owens.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either Children’s Mercy Hospital or to the charity of your choice. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation and funeral services were held on Monday, March 13, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., with services to follow at 2. Burial was in South Point Cemetery, Orrick.
