Prince Hall Freemasonry - In the beginning
February is Black History Month and we will be publishing a series of articles in each Richmond News this month focusing on someone who figures into Ray County’s Black history.
In celebration of Black History Month, Prince Hall Freemasonry history ties into the John W. Carter Lodge in Richmond. The group still practices Freemasonry that was inspired by the events that abled Prince Hall Freemasonry.
Richmond Freemasonry members include Worshipful Master Donald Lamont Ellington Jr., Junior Warden Donald Lamont Ellington III, Grand Lodge District Deputy of Roger Elliott Jr., Senior Warden Melvin Allen Jr., Treasurer Melvin Allen Sr., Secretary Robert Williams and Grand Lodge Board Member Bill Elliott.
John W. Carter was in the Lexington Hall of Fame for being the first Black teacher in Lexington; the freemasons wanted to name their lodge after him in dedication of his success and inspiration.
