CROWDS GROW LIKE VINES
RICHMOND – The coronavirus has holiday-like crowds beating a path to Cox’s Greenhouse, surprising owner Bruce White.
“It’s been about 50% better than normal. Between people having rebate money and the scarcity of food products, the vegetable business has been incredible,” White said. “It’s been a boom.”
People walked into the open-air facility and along aisles filled by various flowers and vegetables, including begonias and broccoli.
“They’re bored at home,” White said Monday, while watching another couple enter. “They’re buying vegetable plants and seeds.”
Customers are turning boredom into a productive use of time, employee Sharon Maples said.
“Most of them are growing their own gardens for the first time,” she said.
White said the virus and temporary, spot shortages of certain types of food may be responsible for leading people to think about the importance of growing their own food, rather than remaining dependent totally on grocery stores.
