Great times on golf course without golfing

On Monday afternoon, I had one of the best times I’ve ever had on and around a golf course. No, I didn’t make a hole in one or sink a 30-foot putt or shoot my best-ever round. I didn’t play that day – much to the disappointment, no doubt, of my brother/golf fanatic Berkley, if he reads this, given he regularly asks me if I’ve played any golf lately. Rather, I was on the links as a sports journalist. Specifically, I was at Shirkey Golf Course in Richmond, interviewing Richmond golf coach Murray Dennis and two of his Spartans and taking pictures for the Richmond News’ fall sports preview, scheduled to appear in next week’s paper. For starters, the weather was wonderful. Unlike some folks, I dislike muggy summer days with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Or even muggy summer days with temperatures in the upper 80s, for that matter. Obviously, then, I’ve not cheered on this summer’s string of sweltering days with my “Go, Summer 2022!” pennant – if I had such a pennant. But I…
