Spartans kick off fall sports with orientation

COVID didn’t get in Matt Habermehl’s way this year. Habermehl, who’s in his third year as activities director for the Richmond R-XVI School District, had wanted to stage an orientation event the past two years to kick off fall sports, he said. Because of the COVID pandemic, however, “I didn’t think it was a good idea to get everyone together the past couple years,” he said. “I didn’t want to risk any of our seasons,” Habermehl said. On Sunday evening at the high school, the wait ended, as Habermehl hosted mostly the parents of studentathletes on what was dubbed “Back to Sports Night.” Habermehl opened the event opened with a general lecture, addressing issues including how to use PRIVIT.com, the website the district is using to register students for sports; and code-of-conduct issues.
