Even after a packed schedule last week, Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump could still see some get-up-and-go in her Spartans on June 30, when they hosted Braymer in offseason scrimmaging.

“This … (was) our ninth game in three days, and so, I know they’re running on fumes,” said Vantrump, a 2017 Richmond High School graduate. “But like I told the girls, … I cannot complain one bit out of any game that I’ve … (seen) them play about their hustling. They … (gave) it 110%.”

The scrimmaging, a varsity/junior varsity doubleheader that also featured a few middle-school Spartans, followed a two-day shootout in Clinton, Vantrump said. There, Richmond’s opponents included the host school, a Class 4 program the past two seasons, like Richmond; Butler, a longtime Class 3 program; Raymore-Peculiar, a Class 6 program the past two seasons; and a familiar Missouri River Valley Conference East Division opponent, Knob Noster, she recalled.
