Severe weather shelter is available

Residents in the Richmond area need to stay weather-aware, as severe storms continue to hit.

Spring and summer bring heavy rains, high winds and the potential for dangerous storms and tornadoes.

Tornado sirens are the cue to go inside and seek shelter in either a basement or storm shelter, safety experts advise. Having a plan for severe weather and knowing the location of the nearest storm shelter is pertinent to keeping loved ones safe.

“We (Missouri) have severe weather specific to our geographical area - severe storms and tornadoes, and they happen quickly. We don’t always have advanced warning. When it does develop, they (Richmond residents) need to take shelter ... for their own safety and the safety of their families,” said Richmond Fire Department Chief

Mark Sowder.

Sowder expressed how important it is to have a source of information to stay updated about the weather.

“They (Richmond residents) need some kind of source - whether the TV, phone or a NOAA radio,” he said. “They (NOAA radios) are available at Walmart. They can be set up to warn you when you turn them on or come on automatically when there is severe weather.”

If you are caught in bad weather, seek shelter immediately.

Dear Elementary is the only certified storm shelter in Richmond. It is located at 701 E. Main St.
