‘Fallen Skiles Hero Day’ celebrated
RICHMOND – In Ray County, the first Sunday in June has a new name. And a bridge in Richmond has an official name.
On June 5 at the Ray County Veterans Memorial Community Building, county Commissioner Bob King read a court edict declaring the first Sunday in June as Fallen Skiles Hero Day. The declaration honors brothers Eugene Skiles Jr. and Charles Skiles, and their cousin, Garold Skiles, all of whom died Dec. 7, 1941, during the Japanese air attacks at Pearl Harbor that prompted the United States to declare war the next day on Japan. As this newspaper has reported, the three sailors were serving in the U.S. Navy on battleships – Charles and Eugene Skiles on the USS Arizona, Garold Skiles on the USS Oklahoma.
One principle prompting the proclamation was that “Ray County, Missouri, has always supported its military veteran population,” King read. Another was that “veterans have paid the high price for freedom,” he announced.
