District title drought continues for Richmond

ODESSA – Richmond, as the old expression goes, must wait until next year to try to end its district title drought in baseball. Hopes of a district title this season ended with Wednesday night’s 5-3 loss to Marshall at the Odessa High School Athletic Complex in the Class 4 District 13 championship game. A victory would have given the Spartans their first district title since 2013, when they were Class 3 District 15 champions. The loss ended Richmond’s season at 14-7. GETTING THERE The Spartans held off Boonville 7-5 Monday night, also at Odessa, to reach the district title game. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, shortstop-turned-closing pitcher Spencer Wolf tossed a gameending strikeout. Wolf’s strikeout came after yielding a walk. “My heart was beating a little bit fast when I walked that guy, but … it felt really good to get that strikeout and end the game,” Wolf said.
