Ray County offers bridge at no charge
RICHMOND – The Ray County Commission seeks a new home for the Morton Bridge on Landing Road, also called East 114th Street.
Built in 1889, the bridge will be replaced with a new, wider structure. The old bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places – owing to age, type and method of construction – and “is an excellent example of a Pratt through truss bridge,” county information states.
Presiding Commissioner Bob King said May 7 the county has received requests to take the old bridge.
“We’ve got three people wanting it,” he said while visiting the Ray County Community Arts Association’s Fine Arts and Photography Show at the Friends Gallery, 110 S. Camden St. “One of them said he wanted to put it across his lake.”
Richmond also has expressed interest, he said. Federal law requires any state proposing demolition to first make a historic bridge available for donation. The cost to remove the bridge or any of its parts is borne by the party obtaining the bridge…
