Rainy days, Mondays sometimes irritating, not necessarily downers

I disagree with Paul Williams and Roger Nichols. Long ago, Williams and Nichols were occasional songwriting collaborators. One of their tunes was “Rainy Days and Mondays,” a 1970s hit for the sibling duo the Carpenters. Older readers might remember the last line of the verses, “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.” Covering two track and field meets in bizarro weather, one of them affected by rain, has prompted me to ask myself: 1) Do I get depressed, or “down,” because of rainy days and/or Mondays? and 2) Why or why not? The answers get complicated, particularly from a sports fan’s/rec sports athlete’s/sports journalist’s/sports editor’s perspective. I will start with Mondays. As a rec sports athlete, I like Mondays. At least in theory. Mondays, you see, are one of the two days each week I usually play pickleball in the Richmond City Hall gym, Friday being the other.
