Fantasy golf sparks Spartans in week-opening dual
RICHMOND – Fantasy golf helped the Spartans in real-world boys golf against Lawson at Shirkey Golf Course, Richmond coach Murray Dennis said.
In observance of The Masters Golf Tournament, Dennis and his Spartans drafted fantasy teams and followed the tournament, won on Sunday by American Scottie Scheffler, he said Monday after the Spartans’ 201-218 dual victory.
“The very first day we did it, … (they were) texting me and texting each other (and talking) about, ‘Those guys make it look easy,’” Dennis said.
Following The Masters helped the Spartans realize that golf is “not all about swinging as hard as you can,” but rather, that “rhythm, tempo, course management” and salvaging bad situations are key to playing well, Dennis said.
Senior Reece Wrisinger led the Spartans to their 17-stroke victory, shooting a 46 (+10) for his nine-hole, par-36 round to finish as the medalist.
“He played awesome today,” Dennis said.
But Wrisinger said his performance was “not the greatest.”
