Sensory skills develop preschool learners
RICHMOND – A Richmond Little Spartans preschool philosophy is learning through actions, based on information from Dear Elementary School.
“We encourage learning through every aspect of our day, including play. One area our class enjoys is sensory play,” teacher Denise Livingston stated.
Sensory play is any activity that stimulates the child’s senses. Sensory play is important for building vocabulary, fine motor skills and nerve connections in the brain. Within sensory play, the fine motor skills are sorting, colors, letters and imagination – just a few of the skills used daily during sensory time.
“As a teacher, I can use this area to also evaluate how well each student knows their colors, shapes, sorting, and their fine motor strength with tweezers, scissors and droppers,” Livingston stated. “Not only can sensory play help with intellectual development; it can be calming.
