Students perform 'Twelfth Night' at Farris
Richmond High School students perform Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” this weekend only on the Farris Theatre stage.
Led by teacher Shari Donaldson, the students will tell a story familiar to Shakespeare aficionados and film buffs who have seen Julie Andrews in the 1982 gender-bender film “Victor/ Victoria.” In the play, Shakespeare’s chief character, Viola, takes the role of a man when forced to occupy a position in a royal house, much as Andrews’ character in the film pretends be a man to advance her show business career.
Senior Victoria Bowman, 18, plays the lead role of Viola/Cesario for Richmond’s “Twelfth Night.” She discussed the character while standing on the Farris stage as people around her got into costume for practice.
“I feel like she’s very brave, because she disguises herself as her brother, … serving the noble Duke Orsino and serving the fine Lady Olivia,” Bowman said.
