Spartans look to ‘quality arms’ to lead them in baseball season
RICHMOND – The Spartans have “the most skilled team we’ve had in a little while” this varsity baseball season, senior Lucas Rodenberg said.
“We’re looking pretty solid,” he said after a March 3 practice at Southview Park.
Rodenberg, who signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College, leads what he and coach Nick Persell consider a skilled pitching staff. Other hurlers include junior Josh Pyle, who also will be a position player in the infield; sophomore Jagger Shepherd, who started as a firstyear high schooler; sophomore Hunter Mitchell; and junior Bryce Wagner.
“And … (there are) some other guys that will play in some relief roles, for sure. … We’re pretty fortunate, actually, for a school our size to have … three or four really quality arms that we feel like can go out and win a game any night,” Persell, who is in his second season of leading the program, said.
