Ray budget includes leasing law enforcement vehicles
RICHMOND – This year’s Ray County budget includes 17 law enforcement vehicles, a point of uncertainty for cost-conscious commissioners and a point the sheriff calls a necessity.

Older vehicles will be replaced by leased vehicles and sold, Eastern Commissioner Dave Powell said. Sales income will help pay for leasing, he said, and feed into a rotation of replacement cars in subsequent years.
“That’s what they’re saying,” Presiding Commissioner Bob King said.
King is not sure the “lease, car sales and rotation plan” will leave the county better off financially.
Upfront costs will be greater, but offset partially by reduced repair costs, Powell said.
King said starting the lease plan would cost $252,000. After paying off the first three vehicles, they will be sold.
“Then, they’re going to have leases coming for less money,” he said. “That’s what they’re saying.”
Powell said the public will get a good return for the money.
