District three-peat eludes Orrick boys
TINA – Orrick coach Matt Brownsberger and his Bearcats almost got their district three-peat in varsity boys basketball.
After trailing Braymer by 16 three times during the second half of the Class 1 District 13 Tournament title game, the Bearcats clawed their way to within four, 51-47, late in the fourth quarter. Braymer answered by making four of six free throws during the final 30 seconds to defeat the two-time district champs 55-47 Feb. 25 at Tina-Avalon, giving the Bobcats their first district title since 2017.
“We made a few shots,” Brownsberger said. “They missed a couple free throws. We … forced a couple turnovers, played with a sense of urgency there at the end and … a lot of things happened. … (We) just didn’t give up and … just gave ourselves a chance.”
“I think we all realized that it was about to be over,” junior guard Zander Stevinson said. “And then, we kicked it into second gear. But it was too late to come back.”
