Additional money goes into county jail repairs

RICHMOND – Ongoing maintenance problems at the Ray County Jail continue going on. Problems include water coming up through the poorly constructed jail floor, water dripping down through the ceiling’s electric light fixtures, poor video monitoring, sheet-metal walls that can be torn into strips to use as knives, an unreliable heating and air conditioning system, poor ventilation and too little re quired access to natural light. Thousands of dollars have been poured this year into temporary repairs. The latest issue and related expense involve the jail’s gas lines, Sheriff Scott Childers said. “We had a gas line break,” Childers said. “Basically, the manifold where the gas line goes into our water heater had corroded and fallen off.” The odor of gas led jail personnel to shut off the gas line. “We had to get that replaced,” Childers said, but another call followed. Personnel complained again of smelling gas, resulting in a midnight call to the fire department. Fire personnel could not…
