Hundreds attend Christmas parade
RICHMOND – Hundreds of people lined downtown’s streets for the Shirkey Golf Course Christmas Parade.
The parade organizer and Shirkey general manager, Ken Lacy, said the golf course took over the parade last Christmas season, when those who normally organize the parade did not because of COVID-19 concerns. Shirkey takes a different approach than the city used to take, producing a smaller parade of 12 to 15 floats, he said.
“We’re not really big, but a lot of our members get pretty active and they get together and they decorate carts,” Lacy said. “We just want to do something to keep the area and the community involved, to try to get everybody engaged and let everyone know that Shirkey Golf Course is here and we’re part of the community.”
Although only in year two, the parade has already undergone changes, he said.
“We started it last year as a golf cart parade,” Lacy said. “Since we have a lot of elderly members and former members here living in nursing homes and things of that nature…
