Orrick’s season ends with 72-point loss

KING CITY – The Bearcats’ lone touchdown in their 78-6 season-ending loss Nov. 12 on the road to King City/Union Star was an accident of sorts, Orrick varsity 8-man football coach Kirk Thacker said. Trailing 30-0 in the District 3 semifinal, the Bearcats faced first-and-goal at the King City/Union Star 1-yard line. Quarterback Blake Buchanan looked for an open receiver and threw to fellow senior Chanler Woods in the end zone with 5 seconds left in the first half. Woods, however, was not the intended target, Thacker said. “He was covered up,” he said. “They (Wildkats) were right to be yelling because he was covered up – it was an illegal play. And that’s not what I called. But we’ll take the touchdown, since that’s the only one we got.” When the Bearcats got their lone touchdown, Thacker “wasn’t disappointed” with trailing by 24 points at halftime, he said. But he was “very disappointed” in the 48-0 second half. “We made major mistakes, and then, … (the) wheels completely fell off…
