’Cats prepare for rivalry with Norborne Hardin-Central
ORRICK – Friday’s meeting with visiting Norborne Hardin-Central in varsity 8-man football will be difficult emotionally for Orrick coach Kirk Thacker, he acknowledged.
A former Hardin-Central teacher and coach, Thacker helmed the NHC co-op program from inception in 2015 through the 2020 season. He accepted an offer this spring to teach and coach at Orrick.
“I’m glad it is here, rather than there,” Thacker said Monday in his classroom. “I’m not sure I’m ready to go back and stand on the other sideline.”
Thacker sensed he was not ready to go home again a few weeks earlier, when Orrick faced visiting NHC in junior high 8-man football.
“I went home afterwards and cried … because those were still some of my … kids because they’d been at practice with me – the freshmen and the eight-graders – and I knew the seventh-graders,” he said. “So that was rough.”
