FINDING THE BRIGHT SPOTS
RICHMOND – Girls tennis coach Brett Terry saw his young Spartans take baby steps during their 9-0 varsity dual loss Tuesday to Carrollton at Maurice Roberts Park.
“They’re slowly improving. … Right now, we’re not really measuring success based on wins and losses, because if that … (were) the case, then … it’d feel like we were failing,” Terry said. “But with having a brand new team, it’s just gaining more match experience, getting more comfortable with the game.”
Freshman Eve Tompkins found positives in her 8-0 loss to senior Naedy Jenkins. One was “being able to run across the court and hit,” making proper contact with the ball and playing against Jenkins.
“She was really nice,” Tompkins said. “It was really fun. It was really nice to have someone run … (me) across the court.”
In playing Jenkins, Tompkins “made a pretty good but minor friend,” she said.
Tompkins’ comments about Jenkins came as no surprise to Carrollton coach Tiffany Baker.
