Putting Whitmer bust in courthouse in discussion stage ‘
RICHMOND – The idea of placing a bust of David Whitmer within the Ray County Courthouse drew a couple of people curious to hear justification for the location during a county commission meeting last week.
Sara Pelis, Raymore, said Whitmer’s bust might be better suited to a church versus a public site.
“We just don’t feel like it has any room to be here in the courthouse,” she said, without a non-religion justification.
The principle separating church and state should be considered if Whitmer’s place in religious history is the primary justification for the suggested location.
“I feel like that would be relevant,” Heather Galemore, Richmond, said. “Also, I just feel like, that if you allow just one religious entity into the courthouse…”
“Then more will come in,” Pelis finished.
“It would just be opening the floodgates,” Galemore said. “Our courthouse is not to advertise religion, or corporations, or groups, or lodges… Those types of entities.”
