Richmond softballers maintain Midnight Madness tradition
RICHMOND – While much of Ray County slept, varsity coach Staci Maddux and her Spartans kept a Richmond softball tradition going Monday morning.
To commemorate the start of fall sports practices, the Spartans staged their version of Midnight Madness at Southview Park. Maddux started around midnight by giving the players the ground rules for player conduct this season.
“I don’t want to start a year without them knowing what my expectations are,” she said. “Most of them know. But the incoming freshmen … I want to get started off on a good foot, so that they know my expectations.”
The practice included player and coach introductions, with each person stating her goals for the season. And it included agility training – a carryover from the girls’ summer strength training.
“A lot of them are faster, they’re stronger, they’re quicker because of those agility drills,” Maddux said. “And so, we just want to … continue with that – to make that a … (precedent) of the importance of that.”
